Sunflowers for Ukraine - Charity Fused Glass
I have been very distressed by the ongoing news about the war in Ukraine. Each day the news seems to be getting worse, so I wanted to do something to help raise funds to support the people of Ukraine.
Sunflowers for Ukraine is a small range of Natroma fused glass pieces that I have made, inspired by sunflowers and the blue and yellow flag of Ukraine.
For every item that is sold, I pledge to make a donation to the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal. I do not intend to make a profit from the sale of these items, but will be taking off some manufacturing costs (so I can keep buying more materials) before I make my donation. I guarantee that at least 65-75% of the price of each item (it may be more, but depends how much glass is used in the piece) will be donated to charity. If you decide to purchase one of these charity sun catchers, I'd like to thank you for your support! Your purchase means a lot and will help me to raise as much money as I can. I hope that in some small way these fused glass sun catchers will help the people of Ukraine.
Each of the Sunflowers for Ukraine charity fused glass items is unique. I am making lots of these and every sunflower is handmade using different shades of yellow glass. The petals are hand cut and each flower is carefully constructed by hand before being fired in the kiln. The images on this page are for guidance only - you will not receive the exact item in the picture. These items are on display in our Natroma shop at Ruskin Glass Centre, so if you're local please call in to choose your favourite.
Please choose from:
Ukraine Flag Pin - small pin brooch in blue and yellow glass with a small metal pin on the reverse. Dimensions: 3cm x 2cm
Sunflower Sun Catcher - single yellow sunflower using various shades of yellow glass. Approximately 5cm x 6cm, threaded on a clear thread with 2 yellow and blue glass beads.
Sunflower Meadow Sun Catcher - one or two sunflowers painted with glass enamels with added surface glass petals, grass, leaves etc. Approximately 5cm x 6cm, threaded on a clear thread with 2 yellow and blue glass beads.
Ukraine Flag Sun Catcher - yellow and blue glass in the colours of the Ukraine flag, with a pale sunflower design painted in mica inside the glass. Approximately 5cm x 6cm threaded on a clear thread with 2 yellow and blue glass beads
Sunflower - single hanging sunflower made with yellow and brown glass, measuring approximately 8-9cm threaded onto a clear hanging thread with 2 yellow and blue facetted glass beads.
Larger Sunflower - a larger sunflower made with yellow and brown glass, measuring approximately 12-14cm threaded onto a clear hanging thread with 2 yellow and blue facetted glass beads.
I'm deliberately keeping costs down on these sun catchers, so each piece of fused glass will be posted out wrapped in yellow and blue tissue paper (with extra padding on the larger individual sunflowers). I'm trying to send as much money as possible to support Ukraine, so if you'd like to help you can make an additional charity donation whilst making your purchase - simply select an amount (£2, £5 or £10) on this listing. I guarantee that the extra amount that you donate will be added to my donation and will be sent to the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal. I will update this page with the amount donated and in the meantime, thank you for your support!
Natroma Fused Glass Designs are handmade by Sarah (Natroma's Founder). I enjoy being creative and working with my hands, and originally took up glass fusing in 2016 because I wanted my soaps to have their own unique glass soap dishes. As I have developed my experience and knowledge of working with glass in the kiln, I began making a wider variety of items. I love anything that's pretty and decorative (anyone visiting the Natroma shop will know I'm a bit of a magpie when it comes to finding pretty, sparkly items for our shop!), and fused glass really sparkles and glistens when it's displayed in sunlight. I take my inspiration from holistic imagery and the natural beauty in my garden and local countryside, to create a range of small decorative items and fused glass sun catchers.
I use a variety of transparent and opaque glass to create miniature scenes, that look beautiful when hung in a window. I design each piece and hand cut my selected glass into small shapes, and these are constructed into mini scenes. Sometimes I paint the glass with glass enamels, before adding more glass to add texture. Each design is fired in a kiln for up to 24 hours reaching temperatures of up to 800OC, and I carefully control the firing process so the glass melts and forms a texture before it is slowly cooled. The final glass pieces are polished and the shiny glass surface is tactile, so you can run your fingers across the surface and feel the shape of the flowers, vegetation and insects. Each piece is finished by hand, and is threaded onto a strong nylon thread with faceted glass beads.
Each fused glass sun catcher is hand made by me, so it will be completely unique. There are many designs of these small sun catchers available for inspection in our Stourbridge shop. For the website, I am photographing a few examples inside against a white background with overhead lights, but the glass colours will vary on different computer screens. My sun catchers look brighter once they're hung in a window, and the camera cannot capture the way that transparent fused glass glistens in sunlight. The images on this page are to give you an idea of the designs, but the item you receive will be a genuine 'one off', and there will be differences to the images shown on this page. The glass beads on each sun catcher may vary in colour and shape. If you decide to purchase one of these charity sun catchers - thank you for your support! Your purchase will help me to raise as much money as I can, in the hope that in some small way it helps the people of Ukraine.
