These wooden oval soap dishes are made from sustainably grown mahogany and are handmade in Indonesia. Each dish is shaped from a solid piece of mahogany and is unique with various colours and patterns depending on the wood grain. Some dishes have pretty patterns from the wood rings and most have a ombre effect with paler shades blending into darker wood. Each dish has 9 holes drilled in the middle so the soap can drain and each end has been carved to create broad feet (see the image of the underside). We have several dishes available so the images on this page will hopefully give you an idea of the colours in the mahogany but you may not receive the exact dish that has been photographed. They are available for inspection in our shop.
The design allows water to drain from natural soap, so the bar can dry out between uses. This means that you can use our natural goats milk soap right down to the last thin slither, so in the long run a good, free-draining soap dish will save you money.
These mahogany soap dishes are handmade items so please be aware that they are not perfect. The oval shape is created by hand and they are made with a natural wood so there may be minor scuffs, scratches (from when the dish was made) or natural imperfections within the wood grain. The wood is finished with wax to give a soft sheen rather than a high gloss finish. The finish can be maintained by periodically polishing with a wood wax. We think these are really beautiful natural dishes and love that the patterns and colours on each one is unique, but if you are seeking a perfectly symmetrical dish with no surface imperfections then they may be unsuitable for you.
These soap dishes are inexpensive items and like any wood product will change colour with use. If they are allowed to sit in water the wood will darken with permanent dis-colouration. They are made by hand so are slightly rustic, but their minor blemishes will have no impact on their use.
